Sydney Prize is an annual award for outstanding undergraduate writing. The winner will receive a cash prize and a certificate. Any kind of undergraduate writing may be submitted, including non-fiction pieces such as essays, creative writing or reviews. The writing can be published in any medium, including online or print journalism. The prize is named after the late Sidney Cox, a distinguished Australian scholar and writer. It is awarded for that piece of writing which most closely meets the high standards of originality and integrity set by Sidney Cox in his teaching and in his book Indirections for Those Who Want to Write.
A donation of $10 000 was received from Leonie Hayne in memory of her friend June Hartnett, a graduate of the University of Sydney with an interest in Latin and Ancient History. This Prize was established to a) honour the memory of Ms Hartnett by offering a prize for proficiency in second year Ancient History units, and b) promote the interests of postgraduate research students in the field of Ancient History. The Prize is to be offered annually, and will be awarded to the student who achieves the highest academic result in the unit(s) of study for which it is intended.
