When you’re looking for a summer activity that’s not only fun but also a great way to beat the heat, there is nothing better than a dip in one of the many Hong Kong pools. Not only does it provide an enjoyable time with your friends and family, but it’s also a great low-impact workout that helps you relax and unwind from all the stresses of everyday life. Plus, swimming can even help you stay healthy, improve your mood, and build endurance.
In a recent report, the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department said that 24 public pools were fully open and seven were operating partially in line with the phase-two easing of social distancing rules. However, nearly half of the city’s 45 pools have told swimming clubs that they would not be able to rent their facilities or close lanes reserved for lessons this season due to a lack of lifeguards.
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has said that they are trying to address the problem by increasing the salary of seasonal lifeguards and recruiting guards on two-year contracts. But the union says it is not enough to ensure that all pools can open this summer. In addition, the union has warned that if swimming clubs are forced to cancel their classes because of the pool closures, the city’s swimmers will suffer the most.
This is especially true for children, the union’s chairman, Lee Yuet-man, notes. He says that beginner swimmers who were unable to attend lessons during the pandemic could be lost to the sport for three years. He adds that the government should allow schools and training centres to use their pools, provided they guarantee a qualified person would be on site for every lesson.
In addition to public pools, Hong Kong has a number of hotel pools that are worth visiting this summer. The InterContinental Grand Stanford, for example, features a rooftop infinity pool that overlooks Victoria Harbour. The hotel also has a poolside tea deck where you can dine while enjoying the view.
The hotel Cordis Hong Kong also has a stunning pool that’s perfect for parties and events. Their 42nd-floor Wellness Pool is equipped with a sound system and fibre optic underwater lights for a fun and unique experience. Plus, guests can enjoy a drink at the bar by the pool and lounge in one of the poolside cabanas. So if you’re looking for a hotel pool that’s sure to impress, check out the options on Klook!
