Hong Kong Pools

One of the best parts about any hotel staycation is relaxing by a gorgeous pool, and Hong Kong does not disappoint. From hotels with swanky infinity pools overlooking Victoria Harbour to those with tropical vibes and waterfalls, there are plenty of places to swim in style in Hong Kong. And if you’re looking for the ultimate in luxury, book your stay at the Peninsula Hong Kong and enjoy their opulent heated pool that is inspired by historic Roman baths (complete with marble columns and statues!).

The city also has many public swimming pools, many of them financed by the Jockey Club. Some of these are quite standard, but others have interesting history and architecture.

For example, the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park in Sai Ying Pun was funded in part or in whole by the Jockey Club, and features a 50-metre pool and several other smaller teaching pools. This is the only pool in Hong Kong with a dome roof and a glazed lobby. Another Jockey Club-funded pool is the Kwai Shing Swimming Pool in Tsuen Wan, which opened in 1976 and replaced an earlier pool opened in 1957.

Many of these pools are open all year round, but during the summer months they face staff shortages and some facilities (such as toddler pools) may be shut down. This summer, the HK Recreation and Sports Professionals General Union warned that about 20 of the city’s 45 public pools intend to close lanes or facilities reserved for swimming instruction due to a shortage of lifeguards.

In addition to ensuring swimmers are safe, the union says that closing these facilities could have a negative impact on the city’s sports development and the industry as a whole. But not everyone agrees with this assessment, and the HK Pools Association is confident that a well-organized management system can ensure safety in a timely manner.

If you want to go swimming in a pool with a view, check out the Intercontinental Grand Stanford, which has an amazing outdoor pool that looks like it’s set right in Victoria Harbour! The pool also has a Jacuzzi, a lounger area and a tea deck dining area, so you can soak up the scenery while getting your tan on.
