Hongkong Prize for Young Journalists

One of the world’s top writing contests, hongkong prize attracts thousands of applicants each year. Winners receive monetary prizes and have the opportunity to present their work at an awards ceremony to gain international exposure. This competition can help writers establish themselves within the industry and build a strong portfolio, but it’s important to read the rules and regulations carefully before submitting an entry. Otherwise, you could be disqualified.

The awards, run by the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong, aim to recognise excellence in journalism and raise professional standards. A total of 18 awards are given out in the categories of reporting, writing, photography and design. Young reporter Xi Tianqi’s piece titled Piggyback Paddling won first runner-up in the Best Young Reporter category, while senior designer Emilio Rivera’s work on the Gaza-Israel conflict took merit in the Best News Page Design (Series) category.

Founded in 2022, the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize is sponsored by Bank of China Hong Kong Limited and endorsed by the Hong Kong Alliance for Technology and Innovation. It honours scientific researchers and innovators in Hong Kong who have made significant contributions to the development of science and technology, as well as to the application and transformation of research achievements for the benefit of mankind.

To be eligible, candidates must submit original articles in their field of study. Applicants must be authors of prospective or retrospective clinical studies, observational or epidemiological studies and basic scientific research papers. Submissions pending acceptance, review articles or letters to the editor will not be considered. Furthermore, no researcher may win the award more than once every five years.

The prize also gives students the opportunity to learn about Hong Kong history and culture through a hands-on experience. This includes a visit to the Museum of History, and a face-to-face interview with a historian who will guide them in their research. The written reports will be judged on their relevance to the theme, systematic use of collected materials, objectivity in analysis and citation of bibliography and footnotes.

Students from Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School, Tak Oi Primary School and Carmel Pak U Secondary School won the top three prize for their reports on “Hong Kong Pig Farming Industry during 1967 Riots”, “Two People on a Rooftop” and “Frontier Restricted Area”, respectively. The judges said that the written reports were outstanding in their quality, depth and clarity of information and analysis. They were also outstanding for the high level of participation by the students and their passion for history. In addition, the students’ presentation skills were praised. The winning teams were presented with the award at a ceremony today. The other seven finalists also received certificates of achievement.
