Despite the looming COVID-19 pandemic it’s hard for Sydney locals to resist a morning swim at their favourite beach or ocean pool. These stunning water-bodies offer the best of both worlds: the beauty of a natural environment combined with that jump-right-in temperature that pools are famed for.
For those with limited time (or inclination) to make the trip out to the coast, city pools like Prince Alfred Park Pool are a slice of summer right in the heart of the city. Buttercup yellow sun umbrellas and green lawns add to the ambiance, while a new-ish facility that won two National Architecture Awards in 2014 ensures the 50-metre pool is always at that perfect swimming temperature.
A short stroll further south along the Bondi to Bronte coastal walk brings you to the historic Bronte Baths. This tidal rock pool attracts a mixed crowd, from backpackers rinsing off days of beach grit to impressively busted aging Russian babushkas bobbing about like natural buoys. If you’re up for the walk, head further down the path to Clovelly Ocean Pool, Ross Jones Memorial Pool and McIver Baths (ladies only; admission is just 20 cents).
The cliff-framed Mahon pool at Maroubra is another beautiful ocean pool. It’s set amongst exposed rock outcrops, providing spectacular views and a sense of seclusion. This is one of our favourite ocean pools because it feels wild and natural, and while it’s popular, there’s still a lot of space.
This is a tidal pool that was created for swimming when Bronte Beach was being developed. Its location on the edge of scenic cliffs makes it feel wild and natural, while being super safe to swim in. It’s also a great snorkelling spot on a calm day.
In the inner suburb of Surry Hills, this shady oasis is a favourite with locals. It nabbed two National Architecture Awards in 2014 for its design, and its 50-metre pool is always at that jumping-right-in temperature. You’ll often find it dotted with buttercup yellow beach towels and a mix of kids, families and young professionals. If you’re bringing the kids, they’ll love the playground and slides, but the queue can get long during school holidays.
Having your own private pool is also a fantastic investment for your home. If you’re looking to sell in the future, it increases your resale value significantly. Swimming pools are a sought-after feature in the Sydney property market, and it’s easy to see why.
Not only is swimming good for general wellbeing, but it’s also excellent for people with aches and pains, especially those with arthritis or other joint problems. In addition to the health benefits, there’s no need to deal with the crowds at a public pool or worry about weather conditions when you own your own private pool.
