A Beginner’s Guide to Blackjack

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games. It is played on a semicircular table that can accommodate varying numbers of players (the seats are called “spots”). The dealer stands behind the table and chip rack. The game is a heads-up match between the player and the dealer. The objective of the player is to acquire cards that total as close to 21 as possible without going over. The player may hit, stand, or split. There are also side bets available. These side bets may pay out if the dealer has an ace as one of their up cards, or if the player has a blackjack.

The Deal: The cards are dealt by the dealer from a shoe that holds multiple decks of cards. The Deal ends when all of the player’s hands are played through.

Card Counting: The process of analyzing a deck of cards for favorable counts. A successful card counting strategy can dramatically improve a player’s odds of winning at blackjack.

First Base: The seat located on the far left of the Dealer’s position. It is important to be able to see the Dealer’s hole card from this seat.

Insurance: A side bet that pays out 2 to 1 if the Dealer has an Ace as one of their up cards. Many casinos offer this bet, but it is not offered at all tables.

House Edge: The percentage of the money that the casino makes on average per hand. The house edge is higher in games with a larger number of “spots” or more complicated rules.

Expected Value: The statistical amount that a hand is worth, given enough time. Actual results rarely equal Expected Value, but over the long run they will catch up.

Basic Strategy: A set of instructions for the player that dictates which actions are most likely to result in a win. It is based on a mathematical analysis of the probability of each scenario, and requires some skill and practice to master.

Hitting: In Blackjack, hitting is a player’s option to request additional cards from the dealer. To indicate that you want another card, you extend your hand palm toward the table and scratch it lightly, as if you were scratching an itch. The dealer will then deal you a single card from the shoe face up, and place it next to your original two cards.

Standing: To indicate that you want to keep your current hand, you wave your hand over the cards in a sweeping motion. This signals to the dealer that you are ready to make your decision.

Double Down: When you have a good chance of making a Blackjack, you can increase your bet by placing an extra bet of the same size as your original bet. This is also known as splitting your bet.

The Dealer’s Hole Card

When all of the players have placed their bets, the dealer will check his or her hole card to see if it has a ten underneath. If it does, the Dealer has a Blackjack, and all of the players who bought insurance will get paid out at the appropriate rate.
